I just wanted to sare my experience with everyone and let them know
that Disney's amazing ability to accommodate the PKU dietary
restrictions extends beyond their theme parks and amazing resort hotels.
The Disney Cruise Line also is able to accommodate the dietary needs of the PKU diet.
I am an adult who was diagnosed with classic PKU at the age of 3 weeks.
Last March, my husband and I went on a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise on the Disney
Magic, one of Disney's amazing ships, to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary.
When I made the reservation a year in advance, I advised my travel agent of
my special dietary needs. She contacted Disney to make sure they had my request
added to my reservation and that they were aware of what PKU was. They advised her that
a few weeks before my sail date, I would receive a phone call from Disney so they could
document some of my favorite foods and low protein items. The head chef on the cruise
made sure to have plenty of low protein items on board for my dinner time meals. They
often prepared portabello mushrooms different ways as an appetizer for me. My main meal
usually consisted of pasta and a sauce of my choice. One night I enjoyed the mushroom
and spinach ravioli in a plain tomato sauce. I enjoyed my breakfast and lunch time meals
on the ship at their buffet. It included a wide variety of items such as a tomato basil
salad, fruit, veggies and roasted potatoes. I was able to get french fries from the on
board hot dog stand by the pool area.
This was my first experience with Disney and requesting special dietary needs and I was
pleasantly surprised at how easy they made it to plan my meals and accommodate my needs.
