Additional notes for people who have previously installed Adobe Digital Editions

If you already have digital editions installed:

Ensure that you have authorized the computer with your Adobe ID before you purchase the book – if you don’t do this the book will be restricted to use on just this single machine. You need to do this before you open the book or the book will be bound to your machine rather than the account of your choice (this is based on your previous decision to not authorize the machine)

To check if your computer is already authorized to an AdobeID:

  • Launch Adobe Digital Editions (if you don’t have Adobe digital editions already you can ignore this set of instructions)
  • Click on the arrow next to library for the dropdown menu and select "Authorize Computer"

    Setup Assistant..

  • If you have authorized the machine you will see the following dialog which shows you the Adobe ID that was registered and authorized. The account shown is the AdobeID that your book purchase will be authorized for – If you are OK with this, you can proceed with the purchase.

NOTE: If you want to change the account that is authorized: Exit this dialog and hit ctrl+shift+d (command+shift+d for Mac). This will allow you to deauthorize the previous account and re-authorize the computer with a new AdobeID (any purchases made with the previous account will no longer work so make sure this is what you want. Also remember you need to register the new account with Adobe before you can authorize the computer with that account).

    Setup Assistant..

  • If you have not authorized the machine you will see the authorization screen below asking you to authorize. Remember that you need to establish the Adobe ID by clicking on the link circled below–this ID is what allows you to view the book on multiple devices.

    Setup Assistant..

  • After you authorize the machine you will see the following warning if you already have protected items in your library that were not authorized to an Adobe ID. You need to choose how to proceed–continuing with the authorization will render previous protected content unreadable. This is what happens if you chose "don’t authorize computer" above, the books are readable to the single machine vs. readable to any machine you authorize with the Adobe ID.
