How to Download the Low Protein Food List to an iPad, iPod Touch, or iPhone

Please see the main page describing the screen version of the food list for information about the limitations of using it on these devices. Each device has its own pros and cons.

First, you must purchase and download the food list according to the instructions given for downloading your book to a computer (purchase book on Lulu.com, download Adobe Digital Editions, get an Adobe ID and authorize your computer). Once you have the book installed on your computer, follow these steps:

  • Go to http://txtr.com.
  • Sign up for a free txtr account.
  • Log in to your txtr account.
  • Select the My Books link.
  • Initially there will be no books shown. Select the upload link.
  • Select the Select Documents link. This will bring up the usual Windows Select File box.
  • Navigate to the folder C:\Users\username\Documents\My Digital Editions\ and then select the pdf version of the Low Protein Food List for PKU file. Then select the Open button.
  • Now you will be back on the txtr website; select the Upload button. This will initiate the uploading of the book to the txtr website.
  • On your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, go to the Apple App store and download the free txtr app.
  • Open the txtr app. Tap on Settings (on the bottom of the screen).
  • Click on the Adobe ID line. This will bring up a dialog box allowing you to enter your Adobe Digital Editions ID and password. Note, this must be the same ID and password you used on your computer when you purchased the Low Protein Food List for PKU.
  • Then tap the Library icon on our device.
  • The book should now appear as a line on the library page. To download the book to your device, tap the line with the book and this will initiate the downloading of the book. This may take 5 to 10 minutes depending on the speed of your Wi Fi connection.
  • Once the book is downloaded, taping on the book will allow you to read the book.
  • Txtr has a search function. To use it, simply tap on the page you are on, and then at the top of the screen you will see an icon for a magnifying glass. Tapping it will allow you to enter a search term. The search will bring up a list of all the entries of that term. Tapping on one of these will bring up the page with the term shown.
  • Another useful icon at the top of the top of the page is the one with the capital and little letter a; this allows you to zoom in or out, magnifying or shrinking the text on the page. This is particularly useful as the type size is small on these devices.

Consult your manual if you have any questions about using these devices.

Please Note: If you have any technical trouble with this process, there is no "support staff" to help you. If you have difficulty with the initial downloading to your computer from Lulu, you can contact Lulu directly for support, but you are "on your own" when it comes to downloading to hand-held devices. Sorry, National PKU News cannot help you!
